Best of Ten: The Lazarus Experiment and 42
18th-Nov-2008 09:30 pm - After you'd gone - Maggie O' Farrell
What are you supposed to do with all the love you have for somebody if that person is no longer here? What happens to all that leftover love? Do you suppress it? Do you ignore it? Are you supposed to give it to someone else?

I never knew it was possible to think about someone all of the time, for someone to be always doing acrobatic leaps across your thoughts. Everything else was an unwelcome distraction from what I wanted to think about.

I knew I should have cleared out his things. Anything that had touched his body was unbearable. His computer and fax machine I gave away to his friends. Two of them shuffled into the house, large and sheepish, picking up the boxes and taking them out to the car, slamming their car boots down on top of them. I think they felt obliged to stay for awhile, so they sat with me at the kitchen table, swallowing rapid gulps of scalding tea, asking me hesitant questions, avoiding the subject of John. When it was time to go, they stood up with some relief.

On my way from the house to the tube station, I passed several charity shops and I kept steeling myself to take all his stuff in there. There was even one weekend when I opened the doors of our wardrobe resolutely, preparing to dispatch all his clothes to Oxfam on Camden High Street. But when I inhaled the scent of him that escaped from the folds and weaves of the material, I knew I could never do it. I've never been able to think of those charity shops in the same way; how they must be full of the outflows of tragedy and loss.

" he had passed visibly through two states and was entering upon a third. after his embarrassment and his unreasoning joy he was consumed with wonder in her resence. he had been full of the idea so long, dreamed it right through the end, waited with his teeth set, so to speak, at an inconceivable pitch of intensity. now, in the reaction, he was running down like an over-wound clock. "

" her glance left me and sought the lighted top of the steps, where 'Three o'clock in the Morning', a neat, sad little waltz of that year, was drifting out the open door. after all, in the very casualness of Gatsby's party there were romantic possibilities totally absent from her world. what was it up there in the song that seemed to be calling her back inside? what would happen now in the dim, incalculable hours? "

" now it was a cool night with that mysterious excitement in it which comes at the two changes of the year. the quiet lights in the houses were humming out into the darkness and there was a stir and bustle among the stars.
(..)
so he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning-fork that had been struck upon a star. then he kissed her. at her lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete. "

The Art of Happiness at Work by The Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler

This seemed like the perfect book to pick up and read. I have deep respect for The Dalai Lama and I really needed some advice on how to be happier at work.

I used to really love my job. It was exciting, for the most part, and every day usually held something new and challenging in store. Nowadays, it's not like that. There's a distinct vibe of us vs. them in most cases, IT vs. Accountants. Some of the financial folk chose to think that anyone can program so they'll just take care of what they want and ignore us programmers. The work isn't nearly challenging enough either, although the people are.

Cutler interviews The Dalai Lama about various aspects of work in regards to happiness. For example, they chat about making money, the human factor of work, whether your job is just a job, a career or a calling, how to overcome boredom, how to have a right livelihood, etc. I appreciated his insight on all of the above. Unfortunately, while I think it's all good advice, it will be difficult to put into practice.

In one chapter, and throughout others, the importance of being self-aware is emphasized. I think a lot of people have that problem, to be able to look at themselves and their abilities undistorted and with a critical eye. All in all, the way to achieve happiness, at work or otherwise, is to begin inwards, by readjusting your attitude to all things and remembering that it's just work and that doing good and helping others is more important.

How Starbucks Saved My Life by Michael Gates Gill

I've been super scattered on reading actual books lately, so I've switched to audio books to keep me going while driving around and while knitting. This was on my list of books to read and since the library had it, I gave it a go.

This is a memoir type book about a man, who was born to privilege and lived a life of privilege. His parents had money, but not always time. He went to an Ivy League school and got a great job right out of college. Gill was a top executive for a long time, enjoying all the perks that went along with it. Until he was fired.

At age 64, virtually penniless, friendless and having lost his wife and children (sleeping around on your wife will do that), he desperately took a job at a Starbucks.

From there we begin his new adventure of redeeming himself. This may sound sarcastic or even sappy, but in fact, this is a really good story. Despite all his dumb mistakes and assumptions that he, as a rich white male, deserves more than others, he seems to really "get it" while working to serve others.

A good, uplifting memoir.

Nice interview in the Times today with John:

Moany Men on Mars

Among the interesting tidbits:

Simm has great affection for Life on Mars. He'd even consider doing a one-off special if the BBC were to ask him. Has the Beeb asked him to be Doctor Who? “I'm the Master. Simple as that. I don't want to be Doctor Who. I might be the Master again... I'm not allowed to say.”

eeeee....

He writes so beautifully. He even hung out with the Robin Hood gang :-o whoohoo!

Could someone who has it scan it for others to read?
18th-Nov-2008 08:52 pm - A Man by the Name of Ziegler
"[Ziegler] was one of those people we see every day on the street, whose faces we can never really remember, because they all have the same face: a collective face.

Ziegler was everything and did everything that such people are and do. He was not stupid, but neither was he gifted; he loved money and pleasure, liked to dress well, and was as cowardly as most people: his life and activities were governed less by desires and strivings than by prohibitions, by the fear of punishment. Still, he had a number of good qualities and all in all he was a gratifyingly normal young man, whose person was most interesting and important to him. Like every other man, he regarded himself as an individual, though in reality he was only a specimen, and like other men he regarded himself and his life as the center of the world."

Am I hallucinating, or is that a classic Who plot?  I could've sworn there was an episode with the Cybermen, where some clueless gits dug up a cybercontroller.

And I just checked my pack and got this.

17th-Nov-2008 11:04 pm - Book #49
Book #49
Book Title: Hard Rock to Solid Rock
Author: Darrell Huckaby
Category: nonfiction; religious; inspirational
# of pages: 254
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com):Lenny Stadler emerged from a life of drugs, sex, and rock-and-roll to become a living example of the transforming power of a risen Lord. Today he is the Senior Pastor of one of the largest United Methodist churches in his native state. Dr. Stadler holds a Masters of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and the Doctor of Ministry Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary.
It is Stadler’s hope that in allowing Huckaby to tell the story of his journey, others will realize the possibilities that the of Jesus Christ offers for their lives. Huckaby does tell Stadler’s story, injecting his own inimitable blend of Southern humor and insight into the human condition. The result is a work that is certain to keep you entertained and make you think. It could possibly change your life.
Hard Rock to Solid Rock tells how God nurtured the seeds of faith that had been planted in this young man at an early age and enabled them to grow and flourish through almost total darkness. It is a fascinating story of one man’s journey and a strong testimony to the power of God’s amazing grace.
From the very first words of Hard Rock to Solid Rock, author Darrell Huckaby captures the desperation in the life of Lenny Stadler--a native of a small town--a Baby Boomer who was determined to ride the wave of Southern Rock to fame and fortune. However, God had other plans for this young man's life and Huckaby tells, in his own unique style, how one man was changed forever by the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
It is Lenny Stadler's hope that in allowing his friend, Darrell Huckaby, to tell the story of his journey, others will realize the possibilities that the power of Jesus Christ offers for their lives. Huckaby does tell Stadler's story, injecting his own inimitable blend of southern humor and insight into the human condition. The result is a work that is certain to keep you entertained, inspired, and to make you think. It could possibly change your life!
...The yellow sports car looked strangely out of place, zooming along the rural back roads near Reidsville, NC...For that matter, so too did the long-haired young man behind the wheel. Anyone who looked into the young man's eyes would have found them to be filled with fear; fear and hopelessness. They were the eyes of a dead man. Spiritually and emotionally dead, at least -- and he was now determined to end his physical life as well. The speedometer needle soared as he drove his car faster and faster. The tires squealed as he pushed the high-performance engine to its very limits...

My Thoughts: I found this to be an uplifting and inspirational story that I have heard before because Lenny Stadler was my former preacher when I lived in North Carolina. However I hadn't heard the story in as much detail as Huckaby told in this book. Every year Lenny gave his testimony and every year it was such a fascinating experience to hear the transformation that Lenny went through to get to where he is today. If you like a great religious and inspirational stories then this is a book that you should read.

Books read this year: 49/50. I'm 98% done!

Next read(s): I am not sure but I just have to read one more book to meet my goal!

Does anyone know where I can find transcripts for Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures?

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a bajillion times but I've checked the tags and I haven't been able to find anything useful. The link I found for Torchwood as a comment to an entry doesn't work anymore and there wasn't anything about SJA transcripts being available.
